Mozilla Firefox before 48.0 and Firefox ESR 45.x before 45.3 allow user-assisted remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy, and conduct Universal XSS (UXSS) attacks or read arbitrary files, by arranging for the presence of a crafted HTML document and a crafted shortcut file in the same local directory.
The vulnerability requires local access to the device to be exploited. It is difficult for an attacker to exploit this vulnerability and may require special conditions. An attacker does not need any special privileges or access rights. The attacker needs the user to perform some action, like clicking a link. The vulnerability can affect other systems as well, not just the initial system. There is a high impact on the confidentiality of the information.
